Going Green, Natural Solutions For Household Cleaning with Thieves + Essential Oils Workshop for Mums

My decision to embrace a natural lifestyle was set in motion when I became a mother. It started as a thought, an idea, a seed that was planted into my mind when I first learnt one should learn to read the ingredients on the bottle.

My husband suffers from chronic eczema and childhood asthma. Likelihood his gene could pass on to our boys although both our boys have not developed symptoms of either problem.

Not just skin disorders. Studies have shown direct links between a child’s growth and development to a number of toxins in his environment.

Let’s focus on one common toxic household chemical to discuss – Triclosan.

What is Triclosan and why is it BAD for You?

Three most commonly used household products that get absorbed by human skin are laundry detergent and dish soap. These I can totally attest to! As a family of four, we do at least one load of laundry every day, wash mountains of dishes (not to mention toddler cutleries) and I use multi purpose cleaners on almost the entire house.

Should one start dumping out all the cleaning products at home?

Well, admittedly it can be overwhelming. Take baby steps and grow your natural solutions over time.

Switching to plant-based household products is also one great way to reduce toxins in the house.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been using Thieves Laundry Soap & Thieves Dish Washer for a few weeks now and here’s a lowdown of these products.

Read on for the full review on Thieves Laundry Soap, Dish Soap as well as two natural ways to clean your cutting board & DIY top to toe natural baby wash.

Thieves Laundry Soap – The Review

“With a plant-based formula, Thieves Laundry Soap gently and naturally washes your clothes, cleaning them without any chemical or synthetic residue. Natural enzymes and powerful essential oils add to the formula’s strength to leave your clothes fresh and clean with a light citrus scent.

Thieves Laundry Soap can be used in all washers, including high-efficiency, and its highly concentrated formula (6X) will provide around 64 loads with just 32 fl. Oz (946 ml).” YL

As a family of 4, we do at least one load of laundry EVERY DAY. Yes, I had mentioned that earlier. Gratefully, the boys have no skin problems (thanks to my wonderful genetics haha!). The Husband however, suffers from skin rashes occasionally so for one, I stopped using fabric softener. That leaves room for me to seek one decent gentle laundry detergent that is safe for my entire family & keeps clothes fresh and soft.

It’s 6x more concentrated than normal detergents so a little goes a long way. Our laundry comes out smelling fresh & clean.

There’s a detailed list of ingredients breakdown and their safety/toxicity level at Butter Believer.

This is one gentle plant based laundry soap that’s high on my recommendation list.

Thieves Dish Soap – The Review

“With naturally derived ingredients, Thieves® Dish Soap effectively cleans your dishes without chemicals, dyes, or synthetics. Young Living pure essential oils—Thieves, Jade Lemon, and Bergamot—work with other plant-based ingredients to leave your dishes sparkling clean.” YL

Say, this dish soap cleans as well as Mama Lemon!

I use the same amount and once, I had a really greasy black pot & it cleaned really well! I am impressed.

Most amazing thing? My nail cuticles have reduced drastically!

Now there’s really not much to review on dish soap as long as it is efficient right?

I wash dishes from morning to night – breakfast, lunch, dinner, Mondays to Fridays, sometimes weekends too. So I swear this is one dish soap that does not dry my hands.

Of course, if a helper washes the dishes for you, get it for her too.

It’s a great all-rounder dish soap if you have young children and would like a green alternative to keep their plates clean.

Do note that the products reviewed are not baby detergents nor baby dish soaps.

Ingredients breakdown:

Water, Decyl glucoside, Sodium lauroyl lactylate, Lauryl glucoside, Sodium olate, Caprylyl glucoside, Sodium sesquicarbonate, Citrus Limon† (Jade lemon) peel oil, Citrus aurantium bergamia† (Bergamot) peel oil (Furocoumarin-free), Syzygium aromaticum† (Clove) bud oil, Citrus limon† (Lemon) peel oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum† (Cinnamon) bark oil, Eucalyptus radiata† oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil

†100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oil

If the idea of going green and natural sounds daunting, here are two simple natural household remedies you can try at home for a start:

Cutting Board Cleaner

It is important to clean your cutting boards regularly to prevent bacteria or viruses. It can help prolong the usage of your cutting board too.

What you will need:

2 tablespoon baking soda

1 tablespoon kosher salt

1 lemon

Wash the cutting board with hot water and let dry. Spread baking soda over the cutting board. Cut lemon in half, dip lemon into the salt and scrub all over the cutting board. The lemon and baking soda will create a chemical reaction not to mention a very effective anti-bacterial cleaner.

Let the baking soda, salt and lemon juice sit in for 5 – 10 minutes.

Wash completely with warm water.

Homemade All Natural Baby Top to Toe Wash

This is my own recipe for my two boys. It smells so good I use it on myself too!

What you will need:

1/4 cup Dr Bronner’s Baby Liquid Castille Soap

1/2 cup Coconut water

1/3 cup Oat milk

Gently swirl them in a self-foaming body wash container. Press out appropriate amount and lather to use on hair and body.
